4/18/15: ECQ Game 2 – Pittsburgh Penguins 4 New York Rangers 3

1st Rangers Goal (Stepan), Even

  • NY Rangers Contributions
    R. McDonagh – gets the puck just inside the Rangers blue line as the Rangers are backing up while the Penguins change, skates the puck back into the neutral zone to the left side of center ice, then passes the puck to Miller entering the left side of the Penguins zone
    J. Miller – takes one stride into the Penguins zone and passes the puck through the middle of the zone across to Stepan skating by himself into the right faceoff circle
    D. Stepan – takes the pass, carries it to the right faceoff dot, then rips a wrist shot past the right arm of Fleury, off the post, and in
  • Pittsburgh Faults
    R. Scuderi – gets turned around as he’s situating himself in the defensive zone, so he can’t make a play on Miller’s pass and is too far away to step up on Stepan
    B. Comeau – is the last player to jump on the ice for the Pens and makes a straight line across the ice towards where Miller is getting the puck, which leaves the entire backside open for Stepan to skate through uncovered and untouched

1st Penguins Goal (Sutter), Powerplay

  • Pittsburgh Contributions
    I. Cole – gets a loose puck in the right corner of the Rangers zone after it was deflected wide of the net, then passes it to Sutter in the right faceoff circle below the dot
    B. Sutter – drops the puck back to Kunitz at the top of the right faceoff circle (cont.), gets positioning on Stepan as the puck falls into the slot and fires it into the net as Lundqvist can’t find where the bounce went
    C. Kunitz – wrists the puck towards the net from the top of the right circle
    S. Downie – blocks Kunitz’s shot, sending the puck up into the air so it lands in the slot

    D. Stepan – loses positioning on Sutter as they try to get to the puck in the slot and can’t tie Sutter up to prevent him from scoring

2nd Penguins Goal (Crosby), Even

  • Pittsburgh Contributions
    B. Lovejoy – gets the puck behind the Penguins net, carries the puck through the middle of the defensive zone, then passes it to Cole on his left
    I. Cole – exits the left side of the zone and makes a pass to Hornqvist entering the Rangers zone as he’s splitting the defense
    P. Hornqvist – cuts in between Boyle and St. Louis for a semi-breakaway, puts a backhander on Lundqvist that is stopped, then taps the rebound from the left side of the crease across the front to the right side of the crease for Crosby skating in
    S. Crosby – backhands the puck into the net as Lundqvist has no chance of getting across for a save
  • NY Rangers Faults
    M. St. Louis – loses Hornqvist entering the offensive zone and can’t keep up with him as he drives to the net and then passes his own rebound across the crease
    D. Boyle – also loses Hornqvist entering the offensive zone, then goes to the front of the net and doesn’t pay attention to Crosby skating to the crease, so he doesn’t stop Hornqvist’s pass or defend Crosby from scoring

3rd Penguins Goal (Crosby), Even

  • Pittsburgh Contributions
    P. Martin – gets a puck at the right point in the Rangers zone after it bounces over the stick of Hayes, then chips it along the boards down to Kunitz halfway down the boards
    C. Kunitz – holds the puck as he glides to the outside of the right faceoff dot, then centers it to the slot for Crosby
    S. Crosby – shoots Kunitz’s pass just inside the left post as he’s falling to the ice
  • NY Rangers Faults
    J. Miller – follows Crosby into the slot, but never ties up his stick and loses positioning on him so Crosby is still able to get the shot off

2nd Rangers Goal (Brassard), Powerplay

  • NY Rangers Contributions
    K. Yandle – gets a loose puck at the top of the Penguins zone after it is knocked away from the slot by multiple sticks, fakes a look at a wrist shot, then passes the puck to Zuccarello above the right faceoff dot
    M. Zuccarello – takes a one-timer that goes off of the left pad of Fleury
    D. Brassard – is standing right next to Fleury so he can smack the rebound into the net before Fleury can recover from the one-timer save
  • Pittsburgh Faults
    B. Comeau – in the penalty box for slashing

4th Penguins Goal (Kunitz), Powerplay

  • Pittsburgh Contributions
    D. Perron – gets the puck behind the Rangers net after a shot had been deflected wide around the boards, then skates towards the left corner and drops the puck off behind the net for Sutter
    B. Sutter – picks up the puck behind the net, cuts around the left side of the net for a wraparound attempt, and puts the puck off of Lundqvist, which sends a rebound to the inside corner of the right faceoff circle
    C. Kunitz – gets to the puck at the corner of the faceoff circle and immediately backhands it past Lundqvist’s glove before he has a chance to recover from the original save
  • NY Rangers Faults
    K. Hayes – in the penalty box for hooking

3rd Rangers Goal (Nash), Even

  • NY Rangers Contributions
    D. Boyle – gets a stick on a clearing attempt up the middle of the ice in the Penguins zone by Martin and deflects the puck to Stepan at the top of the zone
    D. Stepan – gets the puck halfway down the left-side boards in the Penguins zone after it goes off of a couple of sticks, then turns to center it, but it goes off of Winnik’s skate to the front of the net where it hits Fleury’s right pad
    R. Nash – lifts the rebound off of Fleury’s right pad past his glove into the net
  • Pittsburgh Faults
    P. Martin – tries to clear the puck up the middle of the ice and turns it over to the Rangers
    D. Winnik – has the puck bounce off of his skate directly on net on Fleury, where Nash gets the rebound and scores
