4/16/15: ECQ Game 1 – New York Rangers 2 Pittsburgh Penguins 1

1st Rangers Goal (Brassard), Even

  • NY Rangers Contributions
    R. McDonagh – gets the puck behind the Rangers net, skates it above the goal line, and passes it across the defensive zone to Girardi
    D. Girardi – carries the puck above the circles in the Rangers zone and makes a pass through the middle of the ice to Nash entering the left side of the Penguins zone
    R. Nash – skates the puck three strides down the left-side boards into the Penguins zone and takes a slapshot on Fleury that goes off of his left pad and rebounds directly into the middle of the slot
    D. Brassard – gets the rebound in the slot and fires it past Fleury’s glove before he can get across on the save attempt
  • Pittsburgh Faults
    P. Martin – gets caught committing to Girardi’s side of the ice for a pass up the boards that never happens, so he’s out of position and too far behind the play to catch up to Brassard for the rebound goal
    S. Crosby – reaches out for Girardi’s pass to Nash in a non-committal fashion, which keeps him from blocking the pass and still pulls him away from Brassard skating behind him, which gives Brassard plenty of open ice to skate to the middle of the Penguins zone by himself
    M. Fleury – kicks out a huge rebound right to the middle of the slot off of Nash’s shot, providing an easy feed for Brassard to score on

2nd Rangers Goal (McDonagh), Powerplay

  • NY Rangers Contributions
    K. Yandle – gets the puck in the Rangers zone, skates it out to the blue line, and passes it up to his left for Brassard crossing center ice along the left-side boards (cont.), gets the puck from McDonagh, skates a couple of strides into the zone, then passes the puck back to the center of the blue line for McDonagh
    D. Brassard – skates into the left side of the Penguins zone and drops the puck off for Zuccarello, who skated behind him
    M. Zuccarello – gets the puck off of the boards and makes a backhand pass to McDonagh at the right point
    R. McDonagh – holds the puck, moves it to the center of the blue line, then passes it to Yandle at the left point (cont.), one-times Yandle’s pass through the legs of Spaling
  • Pittsburgh Faults
    B. Comeau –  in the penalty box for roughing
    N. Spaling – screens Fleury as McDonagh’s shot goes through his legs and also has the puck just go slightly off of his skate as it ends up going off of Fleury’s blocker and into the net

1st Penguins Goal (Comeau), Even

  • Pittsburgh Contributions
    B. Comeau – gets close enough to a rebound near the right-side boards in the Rangers zone that Zuccarello shies away from his potential hit and doesn’t clear the puck, leaving it at the boards for Spaling (cont.), gets to the loose rebound at the bottom inside corner of the right faceoff circle with Lundqvist down and wrists the puck over him into the net
    N. Spaling – passes the loose puck back to Lovejoy at the right point
    B. Lovejoy – one-time’s Spaling’s pass, which is saved by Lundqvist, who tries to cover the puck but ends up pushing it away as his stick gets tied up with Lapierre’s leg
    M. Lapierre – battles with Boyle at the top of the crease, which causes his leg to sweep around and push Lundqvist’s stick forward, which knocks the puck to Comeau’s stick at the bottom inside corner of the right faceoff circle
  • NY Rangers Faults
    M. Zuccarello – gets to a rebound along the boards in the Rangers zone, but tries to avoid a hit from Comeau, causing him to fan on the puck, leaving it there for Spaling
    D. Brassard – is too focused on the puck and Lovejoy, so he doesn’t see Comeau skating behind him towards the net and can’t do anything to stop Comeau from getting the rebound and scoring
