4/4/15: Columbus Blue Jackets 5 Pittsburgh Penguins 3

1st Penguins Goal (Crosby), Even

  • Pittsburgh Contributions
    I. Cole – pinches down into the right side of the Blue Jackets zone to block Dubinsky’s attempt to clear a rebound, knocks the puck to the right-side boards, gets it just above the goal line, and makes a backhand pass to Hornqvist to the right of the net just above the goal line
    P. Hornqvist – makes a one-touch pass to Crosby just two feet away from him above the crease
    S. Crosby – immediately shoots the puck past Bobrovsky’s blocker as he’s alone in front
  • Columbus Faults
    B. Dubinsky – reaches out and plays the rebound directly into Cole, which allows Cole to get the puck along the right-side boards
    D. Savard – gets caught skating way ahead of the play near the blue line when Dubinsky can’t play the puck forward, which leaves Crosby and Hornqvist alone near the net

2nd Penguins Goal (Sutter), Even

  • Pittsburgh Contributions
    N. Spaling – picks up the puck just inside the Penguins blue line after Letestu loses it as he’s stick-handling, carries it across the Penguins blue line, and passes it up to Sutter at center ice
    B. Sutter – cuts to the left and carries the puck into the left side of the Columbus zone, stops against the boards, then tries to sneak down the boards against Savard, who pins Sutter, who makes a one-handed backhand pass to the middle of the zone for Cole entering the area (cont.), gets the puck back from Cole and slide it underneath Bobrovsky, who is getting twisted around after making contact with Johnson
    I. Cole – picks up Sutter’s pass in the high slot, skates a stride to the right and puts the puck on his backhand, then makes a backhand pass back to Sutter just inside the left faceoff dot
    S. Downie – pushes Johnson towards Bobrovsky in the crease as they battle around the net, which causes Bobrovsky to lose his balance so he can’t even face Sutter’s shot
  • Columbus Faults
    M. Letestu – loses control of the puck as he’s entering the Penguins zone while trying to stick-handle, allowing Spaling to pick it up and go the other way
    D. Savard – stays ahead of Sutter after pinning him and forcing him to make a pass, but then gets caught watching the puck a little too intently and isn’t ready to defend the pass to Sutter or disrupt him as he gets the shot off
    J. Johnson – can’t hold his ground against Downie as he glides backwards into Bobrovsky and prevents him from making a save attempt

1st Blue Jackets Goal (Foligno), Even

  • Columbus Contributions
    N. Foligno – gets his stick down near the Penguins blue line to prevent Perron from exiting the zone and knocks the puck down to Anisimov in the high slot for a turnover (cont.), redirects Dubinsky’s pass over the right pad of Fleury as he makes a desperation attempt to get across the crease for the save
    A. Anisimov – passes the puck to Dubinsky at the right faceoff circle as Pouliot steps up on him and Crosby skates right past him in an immediate 3-on-2 situation after the turnover
    B. Dubinsky – corrals the puck at the inside edge of the right faceoff circle as he suddently has a 2-on-0 against Fleury with Foligno, then passes the puck across the slot to Foligno just above the left side of the crease
  • Pittsburgh Faults
    D. Perron – gets the puck in the defensive zone, tries to head-fake around Foligno to exit the zone, but has the puck blocked by Foligno for a turnover
    S. Crosby – is the last man back when Perron turns the puck over since Cole is trying to help Perron on the breakout, but he skates right by Anisimov when he has the puck after the turnover instead of playing defense with Pouliot

2nd Blue Jackets Goal (Calvert), Even

  • Columbus Contributions
    D. Prout – has the puck in the Blue Jackets zone and passes it up to Calvert exiting the left side of the zone
    M. Calvert – skates down the left side of the neutral zone, enters the Penguins zone, and passes the puck to his right for Letestu when Pouliot steps up on him (cont.), immediately shoots the loose puck at the inside corner of the left faceoff circle after Fleury’s poke check and hits the post, then catches his own rebound at the inside of the right faceoff circle, drops the puck to the ice, and backhands it so it slides past several bodies/skates into the net as everyone is scrambling after the post was hit
    M. Letestu – carries the puck into the left faceoff circle, pulls up and moves to the left-side boards to evade Scuderi, then makes a pass across the slot to Dano going to the right side of the crease
    M. Dano – has the puck poked away from him in the crease by Fleury, which sends the puck to the inside corner of the left faceoff circle
  • Pittsburgh Faults
    B. Comeau – loses track of Dano skating behind him to the crease, which allows Letestu to get the pass across the slot to him
    D. Pouliot – backs up towards Dano when Letestu makes the pass across to him, which leaves him out of position to play the puck or step up on Calvert after Fleury’s poke check
    M. Lapierre – gets caught flat-footed as the puck comes off of the post back to Calvert, so he’s unable to defend Calvert with any effectiveness as he drops the puck and backhands it into the net

  • Columbus Contributions
    N. Foligno – steps up on Pouliot in the neutral zone and pokes the puck away from him for a turnover (cont.), drives to the net ahead of Pouliot as Dubinsky takes his shot and then he smacks the rebound over Fleury as Fleury tries to stretch across in desperation

  • Pittsburgh Faults
    D. Pouliot – skates the puck into the neutral zone, turns to his backhand, but doesn’t make a decision with it quick enough and has it poked away by Foligno for a turnover that leads to an immediate 2-on-1

4th Blue Jackets Goal (Hartnell), Even

  • Columbus Contributions
    A. Wennberg – steals the puck from Martin in the left corner of the Penguins zone, skates the puck behind the net, then tries a wraparound attempt from behind the right side of the net which is stopped by Fleury and produces a rebound in front of the crease
    M. Dano – gets his stick on the rebound first and knocks it to Hartnell in the slot (cont.), one-times Hartnell’s pass into Fleury, who makes the save but can’t control the puck as it drops to the ice and he drops down to try to cover it
    S. Hartnell – gets the puck in his skates, kicks it up to his stick, then carries it behind the left side of the net, to the area behind the right side of the net, and passes it to Dano above the right side of the goal line (cont.), pokes at the loose puck that is halfway under Fleury’s arm and knocks the puck into the net
  • Pittsburgh Faults
    P. Martin – has the puck in the defensive zone, tries to skate back to the left corner to get away from Wennberg, and has Wennberg take the puck away from him
    B. Comeau – is standing right behind Dano but doesn’t attempt to tie him up or cover him as Hartnell passes the puck to him from below the goal line
    M. Fleury – has his arm on the puck as Crosby is helping him keep it covered, but then moves his arm to get a better hold on the puck, which allows Hartnell to poke it off of his body and into the net

3rd Penguins Goal (Lovejoy), Even

  • Pittsburgh Contributions
    B. Comeau – gets the puck in the right circle in the Blue Jackets zone after Tyutin gloves the puck directly to his stick, holds the puck in the right corner, then passes it off the boards up to Lovejoy at the right point
    B. Lovejoy – holds the puck for a second, winds up, and takes a slapshot that beats Bobrovsky five-hole
    C. Kunitz – stands directly in the path of the shot at the edge of the right faceoff circle, then turns just in time to get out of the way of it, which leaves Bobrovsky slow to react and drop down for the shot
    D. Winnik – stands in front of Bobrovsky with Foligno, forcing Bobrovsky to shove them and look around them, which also factors into his late reaction to Lovejoy’s shot
  • Columbus Faults
    F. Tyutin – loses his balance in the Blue Jackets zone as he’s trying to play a loose puck, so he leans over and tries to glove the puck away, pushing it through his legs directly to Comeau
    N. Foligno – wraps his arm around Winnik as they stand in front of Bobrovsky, adding to the screen as Bobrovsky can’t pick up the shot early enough

5th Blue Jackets Goal (Foligno), Even (ENG)

  • Columbus Contributions
    B. Dubinsky – wins a faceoff in the Blue Jackets zone back to Savard behind him
    D. Savard – takes the puck below the goal line and wraps it behind the net around the boards to the other side of the zone
    N. Foligno – gets his stick on the puck as it’s moving up the boards to poke it past Pouliot trying to keep it in, catches up to the puck in the neutral zone for a 2-on-1 against Cole and and empty net, carries the puck just inside the Penguins zone, then fires a wrist shot into the empty net
  • Pittsburgh Faults
None – everyone played the situation appropriately down a goal with an empty net as Pouliot tried to keep the puck in out of desperation
