3/29/15: Pittsburgh Penguins 3 San Jose Sharks 2 (SO)

1st Penguins Goal (Hornqvist), Even

  • Pittsburgh Contributions
    I. Cole – pinches down the right-side boards in the Sharks zone to get a puck that Winnik shots wide, then sends it back down the boards into the right corner
    P. Hornqvist – gets the puck in the right corner and slides it along the boards behind the net for Winnik (cont.), tries to one-time Winnik’s pass and can’t get it cleanly so it dribbles its way to Stalock, who pokes the puck back out to the slot, where Hornqvist gets it again and backhands it into the net before Stalock can recover
    D. Winnik – goes behind the net to get the puck and skates towards the right side of the trapezoid behind the net, loses the puck for a split-second as Burns poke checks him, then gets the puck back along the boards and spins to make a backhand pass to Hornqvist in the slot
  • San Jose Faults
    J. Pavelski – tries to slide in front of Hornqvist on his initial shot attempt that is hindered by Karlsson, causing him to slide into Karlsson so neither player can play the rebound and Hornqvist is free in the slot to score
    S. Hannan – is on the crease when the rebound pops out in front of him, but he fans on his attempt to play the puck, which allows Hornqvist to knock it into the net

2nd Penguins Goal (Kunitz), Powerplay

  • Pittsburgh Contributions
    D. Pouliot – gets the puck against the left-side boards in the Sharks zone after a pass eluded his stick, carries the puck up the boards, then abruptly turns to skate down the boards to elude Wingels and makes a pass while he’s falling to Crosby across the ice above the right faceoff circle
    S. Crosby – takes the puck on his backhand in the right faceoff circle, pulls it back to his forehand, then makes a pass through the slot to Kunitz skating near the goal line to the left of the net
    C. Kunitz – gets the puck just below the left faceoff circle and shoots it at a tight angle past Stalock as he tries to get across in desperation
  • San Jose Faults
    T. Fedun –  in the penalty box for high-sticking
    B. Dillon – has the passing lane in between Crosby and Kunitz and takes the time to bend over to put his stick flat to the ice to block the lane, but can’t do that quickly enough so the puck slides past him before he can get his stick down

1st Sharks Goal (Smith), Even

  • San Jose Contributions
    B. Goodrow – gets to a rebound along the right-side boards in the Penguins zone after a shot was blocked in the middle of the ice, then passes it up to Braun at the right point
    J. Braun – one-times Goodrow’s pass from the right point towards the net
    B. Smith – deflects Braun’s shot from the inside corner of the right faceoff circle so it goes past Fleury’s left arm and into the net
  • Pittsburgh Faults
None – after the blocked shot, the Sharks were perfectly positioned to take advantage of where the puck went and the deflection by Smith was perfect/undefendable

2nd Sharks Goal (Couture), Powerplay

  • San Jose Contributions
    B. Burns – holds the puck at the Sharks blue line as their powerplay sets up moving through the neutral zone, then passes the puck to Marleau along the left-side boards entering the Penguins zone
    P. Marleau – takes a couple of strides into the left side of the Penguins zone as Martin gets caught flat-footed, then passes the puck to Couture skating into the middle of the zone
    L. Couture – gets the puck as he crosses into the left faceoff circle, carries it next to the left faceoff dot, then fires a wrist shot that gets just under Fleury’s blocker and above his right pad to trickle into the net
  • Pittsburgh Faults
    B. Lovejoy –  in the penalty box for cross-checking
    P. Martin – gets caught flat-footed on the zone entry by the Sharks, allowing Marleau and Couture to skate past him with an open passing lane behind him
    D. Winnik – is a step slow to realize Couture is gaining speed to enter the Penguins zone, so he can’t turn around quickly enough to stay with him in the zone, which allows Couture to have an open lane to the net
