3/12/15: Pittsburgh Penguins 6 Edmonton Oilers 4

1st Penguins Goal (Sutter), Shorthanded

  • Pittsburgh Contributions
    D. Winnik – pressures Lander along the boards in the defensive zone and knocks the puck away towards Sutter near the point
    B. Sutter – pokes the puck past Schultz out of the zone all the way to the Oilers zone, then sprints through the neutral zone to catch up to the puck in the Oilers zone for a breakaway, carries the puck to the inside of the right faceoff circle, cuts across the slot on his backhand, and lifts a backhand over the blocker of Scrivens as he tries to stretch across for the shot
  • Edmonton Faults
    A. Lander – gets the puck along the boards in the Penguins zone, but loses track of it in his skates as Winnik pressures him, allowing Winnik to knock the puck away from him towards Sutter for a turnover
    J. Schultz – reaches out for the loose puck near the blue line in the Penguins zone after Winnik pokes it, but he can’t touch the puck before Sutter pokes it through the neutral zone and then he can’t turn around to keep up with Sutter skating after the puck for a breakaway

2nd Penguins Goal (Sutter), Even

  • Pittsburgh Contributions
    D. Pouliot – catches a redirected puck in the air as he’s backing into the defensive zone, drops it to the ice, and plays it up to Winnik at the defensive blue line
    D. Winnik – circles around the blue line with the puck, exits the Penguins zone, and carries it to center ice before passing it to Downie entering the right side of the Oilers zone
    S. Downie – fights through a poke check by Marincin as he enters the zone and cuts around Marincin, then takes a wrist shot from above the right faceoff circle that Scrivens stops with his blocker while producing a big rebound out to the right circle
    B. Sutter – gets to the rebound at the inside corner of the left faceoff circle and fires it past Scrivens before he can recover from the initial save
  • Edmonton Faults
    M. Marincin – can’t slow down Downie’s zone entry with a weak poke check and then loses him to the outside after the failed poke check
    B. Scrivens – blockers away a rebound right back into a scoring area and directly to Sutter for the goal

    D. Perron – one-times Crosby’s pass past the glove of Scrivens before he has a chance to get set for the shot
  • Edmonton Faults
    R. Nugent-Hopkins – was covering Perron before the puck went behind the net, then went straight to the crease where there was no opposition and he covered no one as Perron moved into an open area to receive Crosby’s pass for the one-timer goal

4th Penguins Goal (Crosby), Powerplay

  • Pittsburgh Contributions
    S. Crosby – gets the puck in the Penguins zone as the breakout starts, then passes the puck to Hornqvist exiting the right side of the zone (cont.), gets the puck at the right faceoff dot from Malkin, then passes it up to the right point for Letang (cont.), one-times Letang’s pass over the glove of Scrivens from the top of the right faceoff circle
    P. Hornqvist – skates through the right side of the neutral zone, into the right side of the Oilers zone, through the right corner, behind the net, through the left corner, and finally moves the puck to Malkin at the left point (cont.), crosses in front of Scrivens just as Crosby is releasing his one-timer so Scrivens never has a chance to pick up the shot cleanly
    E. Malkin – holds the puck and then passes it across the zone to Crosby at the right faceoff dot (cont.), gets the puck from Letang, skates down to the top of the left faceoff circle, then passes the puck back to  Letang, who has moved towards the left point

1st Oilers Goal (Lander), Powerplay

  • Edmonton Contributions
    A. Lander – gets a loose puck in the right corner of the Penguins zone after a scramble in front of Fleury and then passes the puck up to Nugent-Hopkins halfway up the right-side boards (cont.), smacks at the first rebound and knocks it off of Fleury’s right pad, then knocks that rebound past Fleury’s right pad before anyone gets near him alone on the crease
    R. Nugent-Hopkins – skates the puck to the right faceoff dot and takes a hard wrist shot that Fleury stops with his right shoulder, producing a rebound directly in front of his right pad
  • Pittsburgh Faults
    B. Lovejoy – in the penalty box for high-sticking
    R. Scuderi – stays at the inside of the circle and reaches his stick out against Nugent-Hopkins, which allows Nugent-Hopkins to have a shooting lane, Lander to move to the front of the net by himself, and leaves Scuderi flat-footed against both players so he can’t block the initial shot or help Fleury on the rebound
    K. Letang – covers the passing lane across the slot, but then gets caught flat-footed after Nugent-Hopkins takes the initial shot, so he can’t get to the crease to hinder Lander in any way from taking two more shots on Fleury by himself

2nd Oilers Goal (Eberle), Even

  • Edmonton Contributions
    B. Pouliot – gets a loose puck in the Oilers zone and moves it to Nugent-Hopkins exiting the zone
    R. Nugent-Hopkins – carries the puck through center ice, into the Penguins zone, and then drops it off for Fayne entering the right side of the zone as he skates to the net to push the defense back (cont.), skates to the crease and swats Fayne’s rebound out of the air into Fleury for another save that produces a rebound in front of the crease
    M. Fayne – picks up the pass at the Penguins blue line, carries it to the high slot, and takes a a shot through Derrick Pouliot’s legs that Fleury stops with his pads, creating a rebound that pops up into the air in front of his chest
    J. Eberle – gets to the loose rebound at the edge of the crease with no defense around him and backhands the puck past Fleury trying to sprawl out for the puck
  • Pittsburgh Faults
    E. Malkin – pinches in to pressure Pouliot when he gets the puck despite the fact that there are two forwards behind the net, which leaves Edmonton with an odd-man rush going the other way
    D. Pouliot – gets lost on the ice as he turns around after Fayne’s shot goes through his legs, then gets to the crease slowly and goes to where Nugent-Hopkins was instead of the other side where four Oilers players are on the puck against Fleury
    B. Lovejoy – reaches his hand out for the puck when Nugent-Hopkins swats it out of the air, leaving him off-balance, not in control of his stick, and not in position to help Fleury as the rebound goes to three Oilers next to Fleury

3rd Oilers Goal (Pouliot), Powerplay

  • Edmonton Contributions
    M. Hendricks – shoves Martin in front of the net and knocks him into Fleury, which sends Fleury’s stick to the corner of the zone
    O. Klefbom – gets to a puck halfway down the right-side boards in the Penguins zone after it had been shot wide and he knocks it down to Roy above the goal line in the right corner
    D. Roy – carries the puck to the outside edge of the right faceoff circle and passes it across the slot to Pouliot at the inside of the left faceoff circle
    B. Pouliot – corrals the pass and fires a wrist shot that goes off of Fleury’s blocker and into the net as he doesn’t get across the crease cleanly
  • Pittsburgh Faults
    S. Downie – in the penalty box for hooking
    B. Lovejoy – leaves his area in front of the net on the PK to retrieve Fleury’s stick from the corner while the Oilers have the puck, so he’s not in position to defend the passing lane to Pouliot or Pouliot himself as Roy feeds him across the slot to score, then tries to scramble to the front of the net with Fleury’s stick so he impedes Fleury’s vision trying to read where the puck is going across to

4th Oilers Goal (Roy), Even

  • Edmonton Contributions
    D. Roy – poke checks the puck off of Pouliot’s stick in the Penguins slot, leading to a turnover to Yakupov in the slot (cont.), has Pouliot’s clearing attempt of Yakupov’s rebound go off of his legs and past Fleury into the net
    N. Yakupov – takes the puck to the inside of the left faceoff circle and takes a wrist shot that hits Fleury in the chest and bounces away from him
  • Pittsburgh Faults
    D. Pouliot – takes the puck away from Yakupov in a 1-on-1 situation in the defensive zone, but then tries to skate around Roy and loses the puck on a poke check so it’s turnover over back to Yakupov, then ends up swatting Yakupov’s rebound off of Roy’s legs and into the net
    M. Fleury – can’t control Yakupov’s shot directly at his chest, leaving a large rebound bouncing away from him into the slot that Pouliot hits off of Roy and into the net

  • Pittsburgh Contributions
    I. Cole – gets the puck deep in the Penguins zone after a board battle and passes it across the zone to Spaling

    M. Lapierre – carries the puck through the left side of the neutral zone in a 2-on-2 situation, enters the left side of the Oilers zone, then cuts across the zone as Downie skates towards the net to back up both defenders, and takes a wrist shot from the high slot that Bachman stops with his pads, leaving a rebound out in front of him
    S. Downie – crashes the net to pull both defenders from Lapierre and then gets through them to get to the rebound first in front of Bachman, where he pulls the puck around the front of the crease to the right side of it and slides the puck past Bachman before he can stretch out for the save
  • Edmonton Faults
    D. Roy – lets Downie get past him driving to the net and loses the battle for the rebound in front of Bachman
    R. Bachman – gives up a bad rebound on Lapierre’s wrist shot that bounces away from him directly into the slot for Downie

6th Penguins Goal (Hornqvist), Even

  • Pittsburgh Contributions
    D. Perron – connects with Eberle’s attempt to swat a bouncing puck out of the Oilers zone and knocks the puck to the right-side boards in the zone
    S. Crosby – gets to the puck along the right-side boards, pokes it past Klefbom, spins off of Klefbom against the boards, gets to the puck in the right corner of the zone, abruptly pulls up as Klefbom overskates him, then threads the needle with a pass that gets past three sticks to Hornqvist at the inside of the right faceoff circle
    P. Hornqvist – one-times the puck past Bachman’s blocker before he even has a chance to react to the shot
  • Edmonton Faults
    O. Klefbom – gets beat to the puck along the boards, then allows Crosby to spin past him, and then overskates him in the corner so Crosby gets the puck and finds a passing lane with no opposition
    R. Nugent-Hopkins – was next to Hornqvist in the right faceoff circle but kept skating to the crease where there was already a defensemen and no one needed to be covered, which left Hornqvist open to receive the pass and one-time it
