3/4/15: Colorado Avalanche 3 Pittsburgh Penguins 1

1st Avalanche Goal (Iginla), Powerplay

  • Colorado Contributions
    T. Barrie – gets the puck back in the Avalanche zone and passes it to the left for Landeskog skating up the left-side boards in the defensive zone
    G. Landeskog – sends the puck across the Avalanche blue line to Iginla exiting the right side of the zone
    J. Iginla – carries the puck down the right side of the neutral zone, enters the right side of the Penguins zone, and fires a slapshot from above the right faceoff circle that beats Fleury’s right pad just inside the far post
  • Pittsburgh Faults
    B. Comeau – in the penalty box for tripping
    R. Scuderi – is too far back when Iginla gets the puck exiting the Avalanche zone and keeps backing up as Iginla enters the Penguins zone, giving him plenty of momentum and time to wind up for the slapshot goal

2nd Avalanche Goal (MacKinnon), Even

  • Colorado Contributions
    R. O’Reilly – knocks the puck away from Hornqvist along the boards in the defensive zone down to Landeskog a few feet beyond them
    G. Landeskog – gets the puck along the right-side boards in the Penguins zone, then curls off to the top of the right faceoff circle and sends a pass to Hejda skating in from the left point
    J. Hejda – gets the pass just above the left faceoff circle, glides down to the left faceoff dot, and slides a shot towards the top of the crease
    N. MacKinnon – has Hejda’s soft shot/pass go off of sticks in front, then off of his left skate at the top of the crease and into the net
  • Pittsburgh Faults
    P. Hornqvist – gets the puck along the boards in the defensive zone, but loses it as O’Reilly poke checks it away from him to Landeskog
    S. Crosby – tries to intercept the pass between Landeskog and Hejda, then just glides to Hejda without taking a stride as Hejda freely skates to the left faceoff dot to put the puck on net

1st Penguins Goal (Malkin), Even

  • Pittsburgh Contributions
    E.  Malkin – steals the puck from Mitchell in the neutral zone, skates down the right-side boards into the Avalanche zone, cuts to the slot behind Kunitz as Kunitz pulls defenders to the net, takes a shot from the inside edge of the left faceoff circle that’s blocked by Holden, then gets the rebound inside the left faceoff circle and fires it past Varlamov’s right arm
    C. Kunitz – drives to the net as Malkin stops and cuts across the slot, so he pulls Holden towards the crease and gets in the way of Guenin so he can’t step up on Malkin
  • Colorado Faults
    J. Mitchell – has the puck in the neutral zone and lets Malkin take it away from him to rush into the Avalanche zone
    N. Guenin – skates back towards the net with Malkin at an even pace, but then loses him as Malkin cuts across the slot and then he gets slowed down by Kunitz so he can’t get his stick in position to stop Malkin from scoring

3rd Avalanche Goal (Landeskog), Even

  • Colorado Contributions
    R. O’Reilly – picks up a loose puck at the Avalanche blue line, skates it into the neutral zone, and passes it up the right side to Landeskog entering the Penguins zone
    G. Landeskog – skates to the top of the right faceoff circle 1-on-1 against Pouliot, cuts to the inside as Pouliot skates to the outside and loses positioning, then takes the puck to the slot and fires a shot past Fleury’s blocker
  • Pittsburgh Faults
    E. Malkin – turns the puck over at the Avalanche blue line as he tries to makes a bad pass across the top of the zone that goes off of Kunitz’s skates and sits at the blue line for O’Reilly to pick up
    D. Pouliot – tries to step up on Landeskog in a 1-on-1 situation, but steps to the outside as Landeskog cuts to the inside, giving him a free lane to the slot for the goal
