1/21/15: Chicago Blackhawks 3 Pittsburgh Penguins 2 (SO)

1st Blackhawks Goal (Rundblad), Even

  • Chicago Contributions
    M. Hossa – Retrieves a puck that was shot wide in the Penguins zone along the left-side boards, carries it back to the blue line and along the line as Crosby puts pressure on him, gets past Crosby as he skates towards the middle of the blue line and draws Perron over, then passes the puck to Rundblad at the right point, where he’s wide open with Perron leaving the area
    D. Rundblad – takes a slapshot from the right point that goes past a screen by Saad and past Fleury’s blocker into the net
    B. Saad – stays in front of Fleury as the puck moves from Hossa to Rundblad and screens him for Rundblad’s goal
  • Pittsburgh Faults
    S. Crosby – over-pursues Hossa near the left point without forcing him across the blue line, then starts to lose him, which allows Hossa to start moving to the middle to draw Perron over
    D. Perron – over-pursues the coverage of Hossa at the top of the zone, but shouldn’t have because Hossa was on his backhand and Kunitz was deeper in the zone to support Crosby if/when he lost Hossa, so Perron abandons (the already weak) coverage of Rundblad and leaves an open shot there with time and space

2nd Blackhawks Goal (Hossa), Powerplay

  • Chicago Contributions
    B. Saad – gets a loose puck that caromed to the left point in the Penguins zone, carries it down to the left corner, cuts back up the left-side boards, stops halfway, and passes the puck to Seabrook at the left side of the blue line (cont.), gets the puck back from Seabrook and passes it through the high slot to Hossa above the right faceoff circle
    B. Seabrook – holds the puck and then sends it back to Saad as soon as he gets pressured (cont.), fakes a one-timer from Hossa’s pass and then taps the puck right back to Hossa at the top of the right faceoff circle
    M. Hossa – makes a one-touch pass to Seabrook, who is now at the middle of the blue line (cont.), gets the puck back from Seabrook, takes one stride into the right faceoff circle, and fires a wrist shot that goes past Bickell’s screen and Fleury’s right arm
    B. Bickell – stands in front of Fleury to screen him so he’s leaning the wrong way on Hossa’s shot
  • Pittsburgh Faults
    D. Perron – in the penalty box for holding

1st Penguins Goal (Sill), Even

  • Pittsburgh Contributions
    A. Ebbett – steals the puck from Shaw in the right corner of the Blackhawks zone, then tries to center it, where it goes off of Oduya’s stick to Sill at the top of the right circle
    Z. Sill – gets the puck at the top of the right circle, skates one stride toward the middle, and fires a wrist shot that beats Crawford’s glove
  • Chicago Faults
    A. Shaw – tries to push the puck past Ebbett in the defensive zone but loses the puck to him for a turnover
    J. Oduya – blocks Ebbett’s centering pass but feeds it directly to Sill at the top of the right circle where he scores

2nd Penguins Goal (Downie), Even

  • Pittsburgh Contributions
    S. Downie – retrieves a dump-in in the left corner of the Blackhawks zone and gets the puck to Harrington halfway up the left-side boards (cont.), skates across the front of the crease and taps the rebound from the Arcobello deflection to the right side in front of the crease under Goc (cont.), shoots the puck into the net after it comes free from Goc and Keith on the crease
    S. Harrington – takes a quick wrist shot to the net
    M. Arcobello – deflects Harrington’s shot so it hits Crawford up high and he can’t control it for a rebound in front of the crease that Downie gets to
    M. Goc – gets run into by Downie and tangled up with Keith as the puck slides to the right of the crease next to Crawford, then the puck pinballs off of his skate and Keith’s stick back to Downie right behind him
  • Chicago Faults
    M. Rozsival – backs up at a bad angle towards the net when the puck goes into the left corner on the dump-in, so he’s unable to defend Downie as he gets to the puck and moves it up to Harrington
