1/7/15: Boston Bruins 3 Pittsburgh Penguins 2 (OT)

1st Penguins Goal (Bennett), Even

  • Pittsburgh Contributions
    S. Despres – gets a blocked shot at the right point in the Bruins zone and wrists it towards the net, but it goes wide to the right of the net
    B. Bennett – deflects the wide shot by Despres off of the back boards behind the right side of the goal line (cont.), takes Malkin’s pass and slides the puck towards Rask, who is caught in the middle of the net since he doesn’t know which side Malkin is going to, and the puck slides off of his pad and into the net
    E. Malkin – skates through the corner and picks up the puck Bennett deflected, skates it behind the net as Chara somewhat follows him, then abruptly stops and passes the puck back out to the side he came from for Bennett just above the goal line
  • Boston Faults
    Z. Chara – gets indecisive on whether he should follow Malkin behind the net or stay with Bennett, so he ends up keep his stick in the air on Malkin but his body awkwardly near Bennett and manages to cover neither as they connect on the pass and goal

1st Bruins Goal (Chara), Even

  • Boston Contributions
    R. Smith – gets a loose puck at the bottom of the right faceoff circle in the Penguins zone and shoots it towards the net, but it hits off of Martin’s skate and rebounds out to the left point
    Z. Chara – steps into the rebound for a one-timer at the left point and drills the puck past Fleury’s glove, off the post, and into the net
  • Pittsburgh Faults
    E. Malkin – takes his eyes off of the puck and skates past Smith towards the boards, allowing Smith to get the puck to shoot it towards the net


2nd Bruins Goal (Bergeron), Even

  • Boston Contributions
    T. Krug – gets the puck behind the Bruins goal line and chips it behind the net to Miller
    K. Miller – passes the puck up to Paille along the half-boards in the Bruins zone
    D. Paille – makes a backhand pass over Downie’s stick to Bergeron exiting the middle of the Bruins zone
    P. Bergeron – skates the puck to center ice and then moves it to Lucic skating down the left-side boards into the Penguins zone (cont.), gets the puck at the left faceoff dot when it comes off of Paille’s skate, carries it into the slot, and rips a wrist shot over Fleury’s glove
    M. Lucic – skates the puck down the left-side boards into the left corner of the Penguins zone and pushes a puck towards the net that is cut off by Fleury’s stick, goes off of Paille’s skate, and gets to Bergeron cutting through the left faceoff dot
  • Pittsburgh Faults
    R. Bortuzzo – gets beat to the outside by Lucic and misses on two poke checks, allowing Lucic to get the pass to the crease before he can knock him over
    C. Ehrhoff – knows Bergeron is tailing off as Lucic goes to the corner but watches the puck instead of keeping an eye on Bergeron, so he’s not in position to cover him
    S. Crosby – knows Bergeron isn’t tightly covered but starts skating to the other side of the ice hoping for a loose puck instead of keeping a closer eye on Bergeron with Ehrhoff not doing so

2nd Penguins Goal (Malkin), Even

  • Pittsburgh Contributions
    C. Ehrhoff – has a loose puck slide to him in front of the Penguins crease and he flips it up to Malkin skating into the neutral zone
    E. Malkin – takes Ehrhoff’s pass in the neutral zone, skates to the left-side boards as he gets a step on Hamilton, enters the left side of the Bruins zone, winds up, and fires a slapshot that beats Rask over his glove
  • Boston Faults
    D. Hamilton – tries to square up on Malkin in the neutral zone and proceeds to lose a step on him to the outside, allowing Malkin to skate down the wing and take his shot unhindered

3rd Bruins Goal (Bergeron), Even

  • Boston Contributions
    D. Hamilton – gets the puck, cuts back into the Bruins zone to get some space, and then passes it up to Bergeron in the middle of the neutral zone (cont.), gets the puck from Lucic, skates to the middle of the blue line, then backhands it to the right-side boards for Krug to retrieve
    P. Bergeron – carries the puck to center ice and then passes it to the right-side boards for Lucic entering the Penguins zone (cont.), possibly/probably deflects the puck out of the air under the crossbar over Fleury’s right shoulder
    M. Lucic – takes the puck down to the right faceoff dot, pulls up, and passes the puck back to Hamilton at the right point (cont.), gets the puck from Krug and takes a snapshot from the top of the zone
    T. Krug – gets the puck along the right-side boards and moves it to Lucic going to the middle of the blue line
  • Pittsburgh Faults
    None – gaps were all reasonable and the deflection wasn’t defendable/stoppable
