12/12/14: Pittsburgh Penguins 3 Calgary Flames 1

1st Penguins Goal (Comeau), Even

  • Pittsburgh Contributions
    E. Malkin – gets a loose puck in the Penguins zone, settles it down, and throws it over to Comeau exiting the right side of the zone
    B. Comeau – skates the puck through the neutral zone on a 2-on-1 with Megna, carries it across the middle of the Flames blue line, takes it down to the inside edge of the right faceoff circle, and fires a wrist shot over Hiller’s blocker as Brodie is trying to cover the pass
    J. Megna – joins Comeau on the 2-on-1 rush, which forces Brodie to watch the passing lane and drop to the ice as Comeau scores
  • Calgary Faults
    J. Colborne – doesn’t communicate with Gaudreau as both players step up on Malkin, which allows for a 2-on-1 for the Penguins starting in the neutral zone
    J. Gaudreau – doesn’t communicate with Colborne as both players step up on Malkin, which allows for a 2-on-1 for the Penguins starting in the neutral zone

2nd Penguins Goal (Letang), Even

  • Pittsburgh Contributions
    N. Spaling – wins a puck battle with Letang against Raymond in the right corner of the Flames zone, then passes the puck up to the right point for Despres
    S. Despres – winds up and takes a slapshot towards the net
    K. Letang – redirects the shot by Despres at the bottom inside corner of the right faceoff circle and the puck goes through Hiller’s five-hole
  • Calgary Faults
None – Raymond was out-battled by two Penguins and everyone was in the right place, but Letang’s redirection was perfect

1st Flames Goal (Gaudreau), Even

  • Calgary Contributions
    T. Brodie – pulls a loose puck from the neutral zone back into the Flames zone and passes it across the zone to Giordano as everyone spreads out on the ice
    M. Giordano – moves the puck to the left-side boards and passes it up the neutral zone towards Hudler at the Penguins blue line
    J. Hudler – redirects the puck into the Penguins zone, where it hits off of a linesman instead of going to the middle of the ice and stays on the left side of the zone instead
    M. Granlund – picks up the loose puck at the top of the left faceoff circle, skates it to the left faceoff dot, and takes a snap shot that Fleury stops with his glove, leaving a rebound to the right side of the crease
    J. Gaudreau – gets to the rebound first and taps it into the net before Fleury can sprawl across for it
  • Pittsburgh Faults
    C. Ehrhoff – gets caught skating too far into the neutral zone (ahead of Comeau even) and can’t get back to cover Granlund after the puck goes off of the linesman’s skate
    M. Fleury – gives up a bad rebound out in front of the crease after Granlund’s shot hits him in the glove
    B. Comeau – is covering Gaudreau, but stops skating as Gaudreau keeps powering to the net, and thus loses the race to the rebound that Gaudreau taps into the net

3rd Penguins Goal (Klinkhammer), Even

  • Pittsburgh Contributions
    K. Letang – steps up on Brodie against the boards in the Penguins zone, then intercepts his pass, carries it towards the middle of the zone, and backhands a pass to Downie along the right-side boards in the neutral zone
    S. Downie – carries the puck into the right side of the Flames zone and has it knocked away by Byron on the backcheck (cont.), gets the puck from Malkin along the right-side boards and makes a quick pass to the slot for Klinkhammer
    E. Malkin – follows Downie closely and picks up the puck when Byron knocks it away, carries it down the right-side boards with Byron tightly on him, then drops it off for Downie, who is now following him along the boards
    R. Klinkhammer – redirects Downie’s pass into the slot past Hiller’s glove before he can get across the crease
  • Calgary Faults
    T. Brodie – has the puck in the Penguins zone, but turns it over to Letang instead of getting the puck deep, which allows the Penguins to rush out of the zone (cont.), then doesn’t keep his stick down in the passing lane between Downie and Klinkhammer, which allows the puck to get into the slot for Klinkhammer’s goal
