10/16/14: New York Islanders 4 San Jose Sharks 3 (SO)

1st Sharks Goal (Burns), Even

  • San Jose Contributions
    M. Mueller – gets the puck at the right point of the Islanders zone after it was blocked by Tavares, then passes it down to Thornton at the right faceoff circle
    J. Thornton – moves towards the top of the circle and passes the puck across the slot to Burns
    B. Burns – skates down the left side and one-times Thornton’s pass from above the left faceoff dot past Halak’s blocker
  • NY Islanders Faults
    None – Tavares was down on the ice in pain after blocking a shot, which left Burns open

1st Islanders Goal (Leddy), Even

  • NY Islanders Contributions
    K. Okposo – poke checks Demers below the Sharks goal line to free up the puck (cont.), tries to shoot the puck on net and has the rebound come out towards the inside corner of the right faceoff circle, then pokes it back to the right point after Tierney fails to get control of it
    J. Tavares – knocks the loose puck towards the net
    N. Leddy – one-times the puck as it comes back to the right point and puts it past Stalock’s blocker
  • San Jose Faults
    J. Demers – ends up with the puck in the right corner of the Sharks zone and tries to handle it, but loses it to Okposo before he can move it away
    C. Tierney – tries to poke the puck away from the front of the net, but can’t get it out of the reach of Okposo

2nd Sharks Goal (Marleau), Powerplay

  • San Jose Contributions
    J. Thornton – wins a faceoff in the left circle in the Islanders zone and pushes the puck back to Burns
    B. Burns – carries the puck to the middle of the blue line and then passes to Marleau at the left point
    P. Marleau – takes a wrist shot from above the left faceoff circle that goes off of Hickey’s stick and above Halak’s glove
    L. Couture – sets a screen in front of Halak so he never sees Marleau’s shot
  • NY Islanders Faults
    R. Strome – in the penalty box for cross-checking
    T. Hickey – deflects Marleau’s shot over Halak’s glove

2nd Islanders Goal (Okposo), Powerplay

  • NY Islanders Contributions
    J. Boychuk – gets the puck behind his net, carries it to the blue line, and passes it to his left to Nielsen entering the neutral zone
    F. Nielsen – skates through the neutral zone and passes the puck to his left to Tavares just across the blue line in the Sharks zone (cont.), skates past Pavelski’s coverage and gets the puck from Tavares at the left dot, takes it to the bottom of the left faceoff circle, then passes the puck back to the slot for Okposo
    J. Tavares – returns to the puck to Nielsen at the left faceoff dot
    K. Okposo – one-times the puck from the slot past Stalock’s left pad
  • San Jose Faults
    B. Burns – in the penalty box for delay of game
    J. Pavelski – gets blown past by Nielsen and then doesn’t keep his stick down to cover the passing lane between Nielsen and Okposo

3rd Islanders Goal (Bailey), Even

  • NY Islanders Contributions
    C. Clutterbuck – picks up a loose puck below the goal line to the left of the Sharks net, carries it towards the right corner, then turns and makes a bad angle centering attempt that hits off of Stalock and bounces out to the slot
    J. Bailey – catches the puck as it comes off of Stalock, drops it in the slot, then turns and fires a wrist shot over Stalock’s right shoulder
  • San Jose Faults
    J. Demers – drops to one knee to block a potential shot from Bailey before Bailey even has control of the puck, which takes away his ability to play the puck and allows Bailey to get the shot off in front

3rd Sharks Goal (Hertl), Even

  • San Jose Contributions
    M. Irwin – gets the puck in the neutral zone and drops it back to Demers in the Sharks defensive zone
    J. Demers – holds the puck as the Sharks change and then passes it up to Hertl entering the right side of the Islanders zone
    T. Hertl – skate past Leddy, who falls down, and faces Halak 1-on-1 during which he takes the puck to the right faceoff dot and fires a wrister over Halak’s blocker
  • NY Islanders Faults
    N. Leddy – falls down as he tries to cover Hertl, allowing him to have a breakaway
