1st Sharks Goal (Irwin), Even

  • San Jose Contributions
    J. Thornton – wins a faceoff in the left circle of the Capitals zone back to Nieto at the left point
    M. Irwin – one-times the puck from the left point past Holtby’s glove
  • Washington Faults
    B. Laich – loses the faceoff cleanly, allowing for a bang-bang play/goal

2nd Sharks Goal (Irwin), Powerplay

  • San Jose Contributions
    M. Nieto – wins a puck battle in the right corner of the Capitals zone and knocks the puck to Wingels further in the corner (cont.), gets the puck at the right point and takes a wrist shot that Holtby saves with a rebound rolling up into the air
    T. Wingels – pushes the puck out of the corner to Hertl at the bottom edge of the right faceoff circle (cont.), screens Holtby as Nieto takes his shot
    T. Hertl – passes the puck back to Demers at the right point
    J. Demers – carries the puck to the middle of the blue line and then passes it to the right point for Nieto
    M. Irwin – skates in from the left faceoff circle and knocks the puck in as it comes back down to the ice
  • Washington Faults
    M. Latta – in the penalty box for elbowing

3rd Sharks Goal (Scott), Even

  • San Jose Contributions
    B. Burns – makes a one-touch pass off of Orpik’s giveaway in the neutral zone to Burish across center ice
    A. Burish – uses his left skate to redirect the puck to Scott skating through the neutral zone into the Capitals zone
    J. Scott – carries the puck to the left faceoff circle and fires a wrist shot past Holtby’s glove
  • Washington Faults
    B. Orpik – makes a pass from his defensive zone that goes straight to Burns in the neutral zone, then loses positioning on Scott as he comes in to the zone and goes to the left faceoff circle

1st Capitals Goal (Johansson), Powerplay

  • Washington Contributions
    T. Brouwer – wins a faceoff in the right circle of the Sharks zone to Backstrom on his right (cont.), gets the puck from Backstrom and makes a one-touch pass up to Carlson at the middle of the blue line
    N. Backstrom – passes the puck to Carlson at the right point (cont.), centers the puck for Brouwer in the high slot
    J. Carlson – passes the puck back to Backstrom along the right side boards (cont.), gets the puck from Brouwer and passes it to Ovechkin at the left faceoff dot
    A. Ovechkin – throws the puck to the front of the net for Johansson on the back side of the crease
    M. Johansson – pushes the puck past Niemi before he can get across the crease
  • San Jose Faults
    T. Hertl – in the penalty box for interference

4th Sharks Goal (Pavelski), Even

  • San Jose Contributions
    J. Braun – gets the puck in the corner of the Sharks zone and passes it up the boards to Thornton
    J. Thornton – keeps the puck moving out of the zone to Pavelski in the neutral zone
    J. Pavelski – streaks down the right side and enters the Capitals zone on a 2-on-1 with Hertl on the left, then pulls up above the right faceoff dot, moves to the middle, and shoots the puck from the inside of the right faceoff circle; Peters makes the save but the rebound goes off of Fehr and into the net
    T. Hertl – joins Pavelski on the 2-on-1, forcing Carlson to drop to the ice trying to defend against the pass and keeping him from stepping up on Pavelski
  • Washington Faults
    B. Orpik – pinched down the boards to stop the puck from exiting the zone, but couldn’t stop it, leading to the 2-on-1 against Carlson
    E. Fehr – knocks the puck into the net with his leg

2nd Capitals Goal (Green), Even

  • Washington Contributions
    M. Green – gets a loose puck in the left corner of the Sharks zone, skates it to the left point, and takes a quick wrist shot on net that clips the stick of Desjardins and goes past Niemi’s left shoulder
  • San Jose Faults
    A. Desjardins – deflects Green’s shot past Niemi

3rd Capitals Goal (Ovechkin), Even

  • Washington Contributions
    A. Ovechkin – gets to a loose puck at the outside edge of the left faceoff circle in the Sharks zone and knocks it into the left corner (cont.), gets the puck from Backstrom, skates it to the high slot, and fires a wrist shot past Niemi’s blocker
    E. Fehr – makes a one-touch pass from the left corner to Backstrom at the left faceoff dot
    N. Backstrom – slows the pass down and lets it go behind him to Ovechkin at the top of the left faceoff circle
  • San Jose Faults
    L. Couture – gets caught flat-footed as Backstrom lets the puck go to Ovechkin and doesn’t even move as Ovechkin cuts to the middle and scores

5th Sharks Goal (Wingels), Even

  • San Jose Contributions
    T. McGinn – gets a stick on Johansson’s pass as the Capitals exit their zone, leaving the puck loose at the blue line
    C. Tierney – turns as he follows the play out of the Capitals zone and swings the puck back in the zone, centering it for Wingels
    T. Wingels – gets the puck on a semi-breakaway, takes an initial shot that Peters saves, and then taps in the rebound that Peters drops by his left pad
  • Washington Faults
    M. Johansson – turns the puck over as he’s exiting the defensive zone, sending the Sharks back into the Capitals zone
    J. Carlson – quits on the play after Peters makes the initial save, allowing Wingels to take two swings at the rebound until it goes in
    J. Peters – stops the puck with his chest and then misses it as he tries to let it drop into his glove, creating a bad rebound

4th Capitals Goal (Ovechkin), Powerplay

  • Washington Contributions
    N. Backstrom – picks up a loose puck by the right faceoff circle in the Sharks zone after a wide shot, then passes it across the ice to Ovechkin above the left faceoff circle
    A. Ovechkin – corrals the puck and fires a wrist shot that beats Niemi over his right shoulder
  • San Jose Faults
    B. Burns – in the penalty box for tripping

5th Capitals Goal (Brouwer), Even

  • Washington Contributions
    M. Green – gets a loose puck in the defensive zone after it goes off of Nieto’s leg, then passes it up to Brouwer at the Sharks blue line
    T. Brouwer – skates the puck to the bottom of the left faceoff circle, cuts in front of the net to the slot, and shoots it past Niemi’s glove
    M. Johansson – drives to the right side of the net while Brouwer has the puck, forcing Burns to watch the passing lane in the middle and give Brouwer room to skate into the slot
  • San Jose Faults
    M. Irwin – falls as he turns to defend Brouwer at the Sharks blue line, allowing Brouwer to have a free path through the zone
