10/9/14: Pittsburgh Penguins 6 Anaheim Ducks 4

1st Penguins Goal (Hornqvist), Even

  • Pittsburgh Contributions
    P. Hornqvist – gets the puck at the high inside edge of the right faceoff circle after it bounces off of a few skates and fires a wrist shot that goes off of Fowler and past Gibson
  • Anaheim Faults
    C. Fowler – screens Gibson on the shot and also deflects the puck so it flutters past Gibson’s glove

2nd Penguins Goal (Crosby), Even

  • Pittsburgh Contributions
    O. Maatta – holds the puck in the defensive zone behind the goal line and then makes a no-look pass to Chris Kunitz at the defensive blue line
    C. Kunitz – makes a one-touch pass at the blue line to Crosby exiting the zone with speed
    S. Crosby – carries the puck through the left side of the neutral zone, into the Ducks zone, and takes a wrist shot from the left faceoff dot that hits off of Gibson’s left shoulder, drops below his arm, and goes into the net
  • Anaheim Faults
    J. Gibson – moved too far off of his angle and then couldn’t make a clean save as the puck trickled through him

3rd Penguins Goal (Dupuis), Even

  • Pittsburgh Contributions
    P. Martin – prevents Etem from clearing a loose puck from the neutral zone and pushes the puck to Dupuis along the boards
    P. Dupuis – gets the puck along the left side boards in the neutral zone and passes it to the right side of the offensive zone for Malkin (cont.), shoots Maatta’s pass past Gibson before he can stretch from post to post
    E. Malkin – gets the puck at the top of the right faceoff circle, skates to the bottom of the circle, pulls up, and then passes the puck back to Maatta at the top of the circle
    O. Maatta – gets the puck and cuts towards the slot, where he decides to pass the puck to the bottom inside corner of the left faceoff circle for Dupuis streaking in
  • Anaheim Faults
    E. Etem – loses a puck battle to Martin in the neutral zone, then doesn’t stay high enough to cover Maatta getting the puck
    R. Rakell – loses track of Dupuis streaking into the offensive zone and can’t keep up with him on the goal

1st Ducks Goal (Kesler), Powerplay

  • Anaheim Contributions
    C. Perry – retrieves the puck in the left corner on an offensive zone faceoff, then passes it back to Vatanen at the left point
    S. Vatanen – passes the puck to Getzlaf over at the right point
    R. Getzlaf – skates the puck deeper into the zone towards Dupuis, who has no stick because of a break earlier in the play, then gets around Dupuis and passes the puck to the left for Kesler at the top of the left faceoff circle
    R. Kesler – one-times Getzlaf’s pass from the top of the left circle past Fleury’s blocker
  • Pittsburgh Faults
    C. Kunitz – in the penalty box for cross-checking

2nd Ducks Goal (Perry), Even

  • Anaheim Contributions
    P. Maroon – intercepts Fleury’s pass behind the Penguins net and passes it to Perry in front of the open net
    C. Perry – has the puck go off of his skate but still gets a shot off and into the net before Fleury can recover
  • Pittsburgh Faults
    M. Fleury – plays the puck above the goal line to the right side of the net and tries to pass it behind the net, where Maroon intercepts it

3rd Ducks Goal (Perry), Powerplay

  • Anaheim Contributions
    R. Getzlaf – picks up the puck along the right side boards in the offensive zone after a shot went wide, then passes it across to the top of the left faceoff circle for Kesler
    R. Kesler – passes the puck up to the middle of the blue line for Vatanen (cont.), then gets the puck back and carries it to the left faceoff dot before passing it to Perry in the slot
    S. Vatanen – makes a one-touch pass right back to Kesler at the top of the left faceoff circle
    C. Perry – takes Kesler’s pass and fires a wrist shot that goes off of Fleury’s blocker and into the net
  • Pittsburgh Faults
    O. Maatta – not in penalty box, but the player who led to the too many men penalty
    R. Scuderi – commits completely to the path between Kesler and the net, leaving the passing lane to Perry wide open for a high-percentage shot

4th Penguins Goal (Crosby), Powerplay

  • Pittsburgh Contributions
    P. Hornqvist – steals a puck that is caught in Getzlaf’s skates just outside of the offensive blue line, then chips it forward into the offensive zone
    P. Dupuis – skates into the offensive zone and picks up the puck from Hornqvist, then makes a backhand pass to the left side for Crosby entering the play
    S. Crosby – gets the puck at the top of the left faceoff circle, skates it down to the inside of the left faceoff dot, and then fires a wrist shot that beats Gibson’s blocker
  • Anaheim Faults
    M. Beleskey – in the penalty box for high-sticking
    R. Getzlaf – loses the puck in his own skates after he intercepted a pass in the neutral zone

5th Penguins Goal (Comeau), Even

  • Pittsburgh Contributions
    P. Dupuis – forces a turnover in the corner of the defensive zone and pushes the puck to Sutter (cont.), gloves down the puck from Sutter and skates it through the neutral zone into the offensive zone before passing it to the right for Maatta
    B. Sutter – flips the puck back to Dupuis
    O. Maatta – cuts to the middle of the offensive zone with the puck and passes it to Comeau at the top of the left circle
    B. Comeau – rifles a wrist shot that beats Gibson under the crossbar
  • Anaheim Faults
    R. Getzlaf – gets caught behind the play and can’t catch up with Dupuis as the Penguins exit the zone on a 3-on-2, and still can’t catch up to get the passing lane between Maatta and Comeau

6th Penguins Goal (Sutter), Shorthanded

  • Pittsburgh Contributions
    P. Dupuis – deflects a pass in the neutral zone and then flips it to Sutter crossing over the top of the left faceoff circle
    B. Sutter – gets the puck and takes it in 1-on-1 vs Gibson, pulling it to his backhand and sliding it past Gibson’s right pad
  • Anaheim Faults
    R. Getzlaf – makes the bad pass that Dupuis deflects and takes into the Anaheim zone
    R. Kesler – is slow to realize that Sutter is streaking past him and thus has no chance at keeping up with him as Sutter skates in on Gibson

4th Ducks Goal (Perry), Powerplay

  • Anaheim Contributions
    R. Getzlaf – carries the puck into the left side of the Penguins zone, continues carrying it around the perimeter, banks it off of the back of the net to himself, skates it to the right corner, and then passes it to the right point for Vatanen (cont.), holds the puck for a second as he skates to the right faceoff dot and then centers the puck to Perry in the slot
    S. Vatanen – makes a one-touch pass to Kesler at the top of the left faceoff circle
    R. Kesler – makes a one-touch pass over to Getzlaf, who is now at the top of the right faceoff circle
    C. Perry – fires Getzlaf’s pass just under the crossbar behind Fleury
  • Pittsburgh Faults
    E. Malkin – in the penalty box for hooking
    M. Goc – chases Getzlaf down behind the net and tries to hit him, but ends up just losing positioning on Getzlaf and then gets stuck behind the net so he can’t get out to the points when Vatanen gets the puck
    R. Scuderi – commits his stick to the shooting lane (again), leaving the passing lane open to Perry in the slot (again)
